Serology reagents intended to detect immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii, a species of obligate intracellular coccidian protozoon parasite. These parasites cause toxoplasmosis, an acute or chronic disease transmitted by the feces of cats or via tissue cysts in infected meat. Most infections are mild and self-limited, but extensive damage (e.g., to the brain, eyes, cardiac muscle) may occur, especially in immunocompromised patients or in fetuses infected by transplacental transmission.
