  • Neurologic electrodes designed to obtain responses of the central nervous system (i.e., brain and spine) after electrical stimulation of the peripheral nerves. Somatosensory electrodes are typically small disk-like surface electrodes which are typically placed over the scalp and/or, spine. The electrodes are connected to the main evoked potential unit (e.g., recorder, monitor) through a preamplifier and an electrode board allowing various channel-switching options. Reusable electrodes are available but disposable electrodes are more frequently used. Somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) are generally obtained by delivering shocks to the skin through a surface electrode or through a needle electrode inserted into the skin near an appropriate nerve fiber. SSEP electrodes are mostly used for intraoperative EP monitoring during spinal and brain surgeries and also in revision surgery after total hip replacement.
