Devices resembling a comb designed to facilitate the performance of vertical and/or horizontal gel electrophoresis procedures. These devices typically consist of a rectangular frame with teeth (either rectangular or similar to a shark tooth) made of plastic or metal (e.g., Teflon, polycarbonate, styrene, aluminum, PVC) whose characteristics depend on the height, width, and thickness of the comb and the width and separation between teeth. The combs are placed in slots on the side of the casting tray before the melted gel is poured; when the gel solidifies the comb is taken out. The comb defines the lanes and its teeth leave holes in the gel called wells. Electrophoresis tray combs are available as standard and/or custom-made components of electrophoresis systems; the combs may be reusable or single-use (i.e., disposable).
