?:definition
  • Software designed to operate forensic digital data copiers, control/monitor a limited number of their functions, and/or acquire, process, and archive digital data obtained during the investigation. This software usually interacts with devices used in the procedures, such as computer hard disks, smart telephones, and digital cameras. Forensic copier software is intended to work only with one or a few models of copiers and related devices, typically supplied by the same manufacturer. The software is not usually available separately from the copier but may be updated (i.e., through the release of modified versions) during the life of the equipment. The software may process the computer hard disk (including encrypted files), analyze e-mail and Internet use; and analyze the content of compact disks (CD) and/or digital versatile disks (DVD, also known as digital video disk). Some software is intended only for hard disk forensic analysis.
