Surgical retractor kits designed for use during procedures involving retraction of the sternum. These kits typically consist of a collection of devices, instruments, and supplies that are coupled together for temporary separation and retraction of sternum incision edges and, frequently, other anatomical parts (e.g., muscles), exposing and/or giving access to the thoracic organs without manual support once they are set (i.e., self-retained). The kits frequently include retractor frames, one or more sets of detachable (e.g., solid and toothed) blades, a ratchet mechanism, and fixation posts with nuts or screws. The kits may incorporate fiber optic systems to illuminate the surgical site. Sternum retractor kits provide hands-free assistance to the surgeon during open or minimally invasive procedures, especially those involving the heart and/or central vasculature.
