Surgical retractors designed to temporarily separate and hold back tissues other than bone (e.g., periosteal tissue) in a joint, exposing and providing access to other tissues, bones, or structures of the joint during orthopedic surgery procedures. These retractors are typically manual, handheld instruments available in a variety of shapes and sizes and are selected according to the tissue of the articulation that is retracted and/or the anatomical structure to be exposed. Dedicated joint tissue retractors are available for use in many particular articulations, such as the knee, shoulder, and hip.
