Multipurpose maxillofacial surgical retractors designed to temporarily separate and hold back the maxilla and/or any of the edges of incisions performed in various facial anatomic structures (with the exception of the eyes), These devices expose and provide better access to the surrounding anatomic structures and include a self-retention mechanism. These retractors usually consist of two blades and a scissors-like handle with a ratchet mechanism to permit self-retention at the proximal end; some retractors include a third central blade. Self-retained multipurpose maxillofacial retractors are used for a great variety of reconstructive (e.g., after trauma) and plastic (e.g., face lifting, liposuction) surgery procedures.
