Retractors designed to temporarily separate and hold back nerves and/or nerve roots, exposing and providing access to related anatomic parts. These retractors are typically slender metallic (e.g., stainless steel) instruments that typically include a curved, delicate distal blade at the distal end that may be straight or angled to the shaft and have an integral flat or tubular handle. Surgical nerve retractors are used mainly during procedures involving neurosurgery or plastic and reconstructive surgery.
