Phototherapy units designed for in-vivo blood irradiation of blood with red and/or near infrared light. These devices typically consist of a light source with attached dedicated probes to apply the light. The devices may provide light radiation in the red spectrum (from 620 to 750nm) or near-IR spectrum (from 700 to 1,400 nm) typically using light emitting diodes (LEDs) as light sources and/or laser devices (e.g., diode, Nd:YAG, Er:YAG) as coherent light sources. The light application may be inside the nose nostrils, transcutaneous (e.g., on the wrist) or intravenous typically using a dedicated catheter. Blood irradiation phototherapy is mainly intended to reduce blood viscosity and improve blood flow.
