Gas delivery units designed to administer a mixture (usually 50 percent of each) of nitrous oxide and oxygen. These delivery units should accurately determine the flow and volume of the administered mixture. The units typically consist of a gas cylinder with a flow regulator and demand valve, a patient mask for administration of the gas, and tubing and/or hoses for connection of the cylinder output to a patient mask. The mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide is used to provide analgesic gas during labor and delivery and also for treatment of sprains, isolated fractures, and soft tissue injuries. Some portable units are mainly intended for self-administration of the gas as an analgesic for pain relief.
