  • Mechanical strain stimulation units designed to apply controlled mechanical strains to cell and/or tissue cultures. This equipment usually consists of a pneumatic unit that generates and controls the pressure applied to tissue cultures grown in wells or trays with stretchable bottoms. When pneumatic pressure (either constant, cyclic, or periodic) is applied to the well the resultant force causes strain on the tissues under culture with a potential consequence of cell and tissue injury. The cell and tissue response to the stress (e.g., repair, death) and the influence of added substances (e.g., drugs) can be determined. Some tissue culture mechanical strain stimulation units are intended to produce tension, compression, or 3-D forces on the cells. The units are mainly used for the study of the response of brain and/or other cells and tissues to trauma but they can also be used for the study of growing bioengineered tissues.
