  • Prostheses shaped as thin outer shells that are fitted over orbital eyeball prostheses or natural eyeballs (in cases of disfigurement or disease) and are designed to look like the natural sclera with iris and pupil. Sclera shell prostheses are made by ocularists, out of hard, highly-polished materials (e.g., acrylics, cryolite, glass), and may contain very thin silk threads to mimic the veins in natural sclera. Some scleral shells may be affixed by their posterior surface to the anterior surface of an artificial orbital prosthesis to provide greater ocular motility while others may be worn as a contact lens. Scleral shells may help to maintain the proper position of the eyelids. Scleral shell prostheses may be used in phthisical eyes, anophthalmic eyes, microphthalmic eyes, severe dry eyes (as a protective covering), and other conditions where trauma or disease has disfigured the eye.
