Video recorders designed to store video and usually also audio data in in digital format in an internal magnetic memory (i.e., hard disk drive, HDD). These recorders usually consist of an electromechanical device that includes external connectors to attach video cameras or other sources of video and sound signals, data processors, controls, and a HDD memory. Some recorders include external slots or connectors for compact or digital versatile disks (i.e., CDs and DVDs respectively) or external memory cards. The video and audio information may be recorded using a variety of standards (e.g., NTSC, PAL). Hard disk video recorders usually have playing capabilities that include a digital/analog converter and usually provide output to television reproduction devices (e.g., video monitors or television sets). Hard disk video recorders are mostly available in tabletop, rack mounted, and portable versions.
