Devices designed to reproduce (playback) stored sound information. Audio players usually consist of an electromechanical device that includes sound signal processors; controls; an integral electronic memory and/or an external slot for optical compact discs or, less frequently, an audio cassette. The players may include a digital/analog converter and also integral amplifiers and speakers or can provide output to sound reproduction systems. Audio players are available in tabletop, rack mounted, and portable versions; most audio recorders include also playback capabilities.
