Stimulators that apply electric current to target tissues via electrodes placed on the skin. These stimulators typically include several predetermined stimulation modulation options (e.g., pulse frequency, pulse duration). Additionally, these stimulators typically include several preprogrammed algorithms for application of electrical current at a frequency and intensity intended to generate an analgesic effect in peripheral nerves (i.e., transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation [TENS]) or to generate muscle contraction (i.e., neuromuscular electrical stimulation [NMES]). Some units may include additional programs that extend functionality to other applications involving transcutaneous current (i.e., ionotophoresis).
