?:definition
  • Computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) system software designed to operate systems that acquire, process, and store digital data and images needed for manufacturing a healthcare product and then send the data directly or through a network to milling units or other manufacturing machines (e.g., additive manufacturing) for automated manufacturing and/or repair of the product. The software may also control/monitor a limited number of the system functions. This software usually interacts with devices used in the procedure, such as optical scanning system and milling/drilling machines. Some system software may allow also the processing and/or sending data from the digitization system to and from hospital information systems. CAD/CAM system software may be available as a component of the CAD/CAM system or as a separate software package; the software may be updated (i.e., through the release of modified versions) during the life of the system equipment. CAD/CAM system software is used in specific healthcare areas (e.g., dental, orthopedic, ophthalmic) and/or in associated laboratories and workshops.
