A human immunoconjugate (ICON) fusion protein composed of a modified version of human factor VII (FVII) which targets tissue factor (TF) that is fused to the Fc domain of the human immunoglobulin G1, with potential anti-thrombotic and antineoplastic activities. Acting in a similar manner as plasma FVII, the natural ligand of TF, ICON-1 targets and binds to TF expressed on neovascular endothelia, thereby preventing TF-mediated signaling pathways, and leading to the initiation of an immune response and the destruction of neovascular tissue. This prevents angiogenesis, inflammation and blood coagulation. Upon intravitreal administration, ICON-1 may block TF-induced angiogenesis and treat wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and ocular melanoma. TF, a naturally occurring glycoprotein in humans, regulates blood clotting, angiogenesis, and inflammation.
