?:definition
  • Dental materials intended to whiten teeth that have become discolored by stains, trauma, or endodontic treatment. These materials contain a bleaching agent, typically hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide; however, other whiteners containing alternative bleaching agents are available. Whiteners are available in multiple compositions including gels, rinses, chewing gums, toothpastes, paint-on films, and strips. Additionally, whiteners may be applied extracoronally to the tooth surface or endodontically (typically in patients who have undergone root canal procedures). They may be used in dentist\'s offices (i.e., professionally applied) or used at home (i.e., dentist-prescribed home-use or over-the-counter).
