  • Materials designed prevent the loss of liquid (e.g., blood, spinal fluid) or gas from an anatomic structure through the formation of a mechanical barrier (i.e., seal). In the case of hemorrhage control, tissue sealants are capable of acting independently of the body\'s clotting mechanism. Tissue sealants are frequently supplied in a dedicated applicator containing two separated components, typically a polymer precursor (i.e., monomer) and a polymerization initiator. Mixing of the components at the time of application leads to the formation of a polymer (e.g., hydrogel) that forms a mechanical barrier to liquid/gas leakage.
