Radiometers used to measure the power of an optical signal transmitted through a fiberoptic cable. These instruments typically include a calibrated sensor, amplifier and a user interface. The sensor primarily consists of a photodiode appropriate for the range of detected wavelengths and power levels. Radiometers usually display optical power in dBm (decibel-milliwatt) or mW (milliwatt) units and the wavelength or range of wavelengths. Fiberoptic cable radiometers can be used for absolute optical fiber power measurements and optical fiber power loss measurements; and some units also display information on fiber faults or other related information. These units are usually handheld and battery-powered devices.
