Temporarily shutting down schools for the COVID-19 pandemic in the spring of 2020 was a challenge for all educators. However, for the teachers at one elementary school, this move to remote learning was particularly difficult emotionally as it was coupled with the permanent closing of the school. Unbeknownst to these educators, when they said goodbye to their students for a scheduled four-day weekend, they would never see their students in their school again. Former principal Sarah Rozny describes the unique, lingering sadness of being asked to say goodbye to her staff and students amid a pandemic and connects it to the situation teachers around the world faced.
