  • The paper deals with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the related restraint measures on the French voluntary associations and foundations It gives an overview of how the working conditions changed in various segments of the nonprofit sector, namely in the fields of health and social care, unemployment and social inclusion, advocacy, education, culture, sports and leisure It describes the problems faced by the closed organizations and the unemployment benefits available for their employees It also reports on the services provided by voluntary associations and foundations which can continue their work and on the specific challenges they have to face while trying to meet the needs of their dients A separate chapter examines the growing role of volunteers and the strengthening of (organized and informal) solidarity as a reaction of civil society to the Covid-19 crisis and its social consequence& Finally, the author wonders how durable the pandemic-generated change of the value system will be, whether the level of solidarity will remain high and what follows from this for the associations and foundations She develops two (one pessimistic and one optimistic) scenarios representing the alternative futures for civil society
