?:abstract
  • It’s hard to look at the suffering and chaos that surrounds me as I write this text, already consumed within the now global pandemic of COVID-19 It’s hard to imagine what the world might look like when this issue appears in your hands (or on your screens) three months from now So I am looking elsewhere, not as a gesture of refusal or denial of the reality around us but as a way to manage the barrage of news alerts that now punctuate my day I look elsewhere to find moments of promise, of healing, of relief We are all fundamentally changed by this virus, as we struggle to transform our personal and professional lives in its shadow I do not know what the future holds, but I do hope that this issue of Art Journal (whenever you may read it) demonstrates the value of looking anew, looking askance (as Michael Leja has taught us), and looking elsewhere This summer issue reflects the diversity of our disciplines and the promise of exploring the unseen or the overlooked
