Condoms intended to be worn on a person\'s penis during coitus to provide a physical barrier to conception and/or transmission of sexually transmitted infections. External condoms are designed to prevent semen from gaining access to the female reproductive tract by providing a physical barrier between the penis and the vagina in order to prevent conception. They can also be used to provide protection against sexually transmitted infections by preventing microorganisms from being transmitted from one partner to another during intercourse. External condoms are sheaths with one closed end and one open end; they usually are sized approximately 2 inches in width and 7 inches in length. They are made of seamless latex, polyurethane, polyisoprene, or lamb intestine; they are soft, thin, and transparent, and some come pre-lubricated.
