A species of facultatively anaerobic, Gram positive bacteria assigned to the phylum Actinobacteria. This bacteria is catalase and oxidase negative, ferments lactose, produces the exotoxin Pyolysin O and neuraminidases and is hemolytic. A. pyogenes is a commensal organism of the mucous membranes of domestic animals and may become pathogenic in cases of trauma and immunosuppression.
