Devices consisting of two lenses mounted in a frame that holds the lenses in an appropriate position before the eyes to assist vision. The metal or plastic frame is placed on the nose and is attached to two hinged legs that are supported by the ears. The lenses are usually graduated to improve the visual acuity of the user and may be configured as monofocal, bifocal, trifocal, or progressive. Eyeglasses are used mainly as a vision aid (i.e., corrective or assistive eyeglasses), but some dedicated eyeglasses are used to perform special tests (e.g., nystagmus), to protect the eye (e.g., sunglasses), or for aesthetic purposes.
