Solutions, gel, or sprays designed to resemble the moisturizing properties of natural saliva. These products typically consist of water solutions (or gels), including Sorbitol, sodium chloride, and carboxymethylcellulose. Artificial saliva is intended to substitute for natural saliva for alleviating symptoms of dry mouth and/or difficulties of swallowing and changing taste in patients with reduced or absent salivary flow as a result of salivary gland dysfunction (xerostomia). This solution may contain products to protect tooth enamel (e.g., fluorides) but is not intended to replace the digestive properties of natural saliva.
