A term used to describe oral, non-keratinized mucosal ulcerations that are shallow, round to oval with a grayish base, and are usually painful. Recurrent aphthous ulcers are often associated with predisposing factors such as stress, familial tendency, trauma, drug hypersensitivity, or underlying disease such as inflammatory bowel disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, and Behcet disease.
