Sponges designed for use during surgical procedures. These sponges are typically small pieces of sterile absorbent porous materials (e.g., cotton twill, gauze, rayon) that frequently include a detectable (e.g., x-ray radiopaque element, radiofrequency label) component and/or are impregnated with an agent or substance to facilitate their use (e.g., odor, moisture control) or an antimicrobial drugs. Dedicated surgical sponges intended for particular specialties such as laparoscopy, neurosurgery, and ophthalmology and/or procedures (e.g., blunt dissection) are available.
