Devices designed for temporary implantation under the skin to produce tension and an increase in the amount of skin tissue. These devices are typically balloons that are inserted under the skin and periodically expanded by injections of fluid (e.g., saline solution). The excess of skin grown (e.g., on the back or buttocks) can be harvested and used at another body site where skin was lost due to trauma, burns, or wounds; the technique is sometimes used for breast reconstruction surgery after radical mastectomy to facilitate the subsequent implantation of a permanent (e.g., a silicone) breast implant).
