  • Screens designed to intensify the latent image on x-ray films used in radiography. These screens typically consist of a thin sheet of celluloid or other radiolucent material, coated with a thin layer of a suspension of dehydrated x-ray excitable phosphors on the cassette side that is in contact with the film when it is mounted in the cassette. When x-rays act on phosphors they glow with a visible light intensifying the generation of the latent image on the film. This action reduces the patient exposure to x-rays usually in a range of 10 to 40 times.
