Devices designed to be implanted temporarily or permanently in the inferior vena cava for the purpose of capturing large clots, preventing them from traveling to the lung where they could cause pulmonary embolism. Vena cava filters typically consist of a metallic (e.g., nitinol, stainless steel, titanium) apparatus that is placed within the inferior vena cava using dedicated catheter-based deployment systems. When deployed in the vena cava, these filters occlude the vessel sufficiently to capture large blood clots while maintaining normal blood flow. Vena cava filters may be designed to be permanently implanted or may be designed to be retrieved with a dedicated catheter-based retrieval system when the risk of pulmonary embolism has decreased.
