  • Tubes designed for insertion through a permanent artificial gastric fistula from the anterior gastric wall to the surface of the abdominal wall; the distal tip remains in the stomach. These tubes may be placed surgically (i.e., laparotomy) or by using a percutaneous endoscopic procedure. Gastrostomy tubes are mostly used for feeding patients who require long-term enteral feeding but who are unable to maintain sufficient oral intake, such as patients who have severe neurologic impairment; those with tumors of the mouth, larynx, or esophagus; and infants who require enteral nutrition. The tubes are available in a variety of sizes and materials according to the intended use and the insertion procedure. Some of these tubes are also used for drainage or for feeding and drainage.
