  • Synovial biopsy, pigmented villonodular synovitis: Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is an unusual benign disease of unknown cause. The lesion consists of reddish-brown synovial villous projections and is associated with hemorrhagic synovial fluid. PVNS can be diffuse or localized and can involve the joint or tendon synovium. PVNS is most common in young patients with equal distribution between males and females. Unilateral knee involvement is the most common. Total synovectomy should be performed as incomplete resection often leads to recurrence.
