Isotope bone densitometers that use a single source to yield an essentially monoenergetic (one discrete line spectrum) beam of gamma rays (x-ray photons). In addition to the single photon source, these densitometers typically include a scanner, a single-channel analyzer, and a computer with appropriate software. Single-photon densitometers are used to assess bone mineral content in the appendicular skeleton, usually by measuring the forearm (radius) or the heel.
