Brachytherapy applicators designed to deliver therapeutic radioactive sources to, retrieve them from, and/or hold them at the treatment site using automated procedures; automated brachytherapy applicators are usually connected to (either directly or through a transfer tube), or are an integral part of, a remote afterloading system. These applicators typically include hollow needles, catheters, templates, and/or cannulae; they are frequently configured for use according to the treatment site, such as on the surface of the body (i.e., topical) or within the body (e.g., interstitial, intracavitary). Most applicators are configured for use only with a particular afterloading system. Automated brachytherapy applicators are typically used to treat malignant tumors.
