Cabinets designed to store a large number (typically from a few hundred to several thousand) of slides individually in special mountings or racks. These cabinets are manufactured in different configurations that permit either horizontal or vertical filing; they are available in freestanding and over-the-counter configurations. The slides are usually stored in rows, providing full visibility and easy searching, mounting, and removal; they are frequently protected using translucent sheets. Slide storage cabinets are used mainly for microscope glass slides and 35 mm projection slides; some cabinets are also appropriate to hold histologic cassettes.
