Combinations of cables and leads designed for electrical connection between electrodes placed on or in the body and an electrosurgical unit (ESU). These combined devices may consist of a cable with one or two leads (for monopolar and bipolar surgery respectively) attached to active electrodes; monopolar surgery typically involves using pen-like electrodes while bipolar surgery is performed usually using the tips of surgical instruments such as forceps or scissors as the electrodes. Monopolar surgery requires an additional cable that is usually attached directly to a dispersive (i.e., return) electrode. ESU cables/leads are used to pass high density radiofrequency energy through the tissues while performing electrosurgery.
