Calibrators designed to test the accuracy of ophthalmic tonometers. These calibrators usually include measuring (e.g., force, area) instruments with physical characteristics and measuring ranges appropriate to assess the type of tonometer (e.g., indentation, applanation, noncontact) under test. Calibrators may be supplied as accessories to ophthalmic tonometers; some tonometers include self-calibration capabilities. Ophthalmic tonometer calibrators are used for periodic verification of tonometers; new types of tonometers are frequently calibrated in laboratories and/or factories by comparison to in vivo or in vitro manometric intraocular pressure measurements.
