  • Tracheal catheters designed for periodic aspiration of liquids and/or semisolids from a patient\'s upper airway. These catheters are flexible (e.g., plastic) tubes, usually 40 to 56 cm (16 to 22 inches) in length and small enough in diameter to fit through the endotracheal tube without a large increase in airway resistance. They usually have smooth, rounded, distal-tip configurations and end and side holes. Most include a finger-controlled valve to regulate the suctioning pressure. Tracheal suction catheters are externally attached through a large-diameter extension tube to the vacuum system and a collection jar. These catheters are used to remove excessive internal secretions, such as mucus, from the lungs, bronchi, trachea, and pharynx.
