  • Systems used to separate mixtures of chemical compounds into individual components depending on the different rates at which various substances moving in a stream (mobile phase) are retarded by a stationary material (stationary phase) as they pass over it. These devices include as principal components the adsorbing material support system (e.g., column, thin layer), a developing or eluting solvent mixture, and a detector to identify the separated components (e.g., a densitometer).
