Counters designed to verify the quantity of sponges used during a surgical procedure to help prevent the retention of sponges inside the patient before closure of the operative field. These counters may consist of a mechanical holder intended to facilitate the manual count of the sponges or devices that can detect, identify, and count the quantity of sponges, typically based either on the identification of radiofrequency (RF) labeled sponges or on the reading of bar-coded identified sponges. Bar-coded readers can also identify and count the sponges and related devices at the beginning and during the last steps of a surgical procedure.
