  • Filters designed to retain bacteria from a circulating current of fluid (gas, liquid, or both); some filters can also retain several types of viruses. Bacteria filters can retain very small particulates; they are intended for uses such as filtering inspiratory gases in patient care devices (e.g., ventilators, tracheostomy tubes), especially in patients whose upper respiratory tract has been bypassed; avoiding cross-contamination between isolated patients and the environment; and filtering inspired air in biological (chemical) masks used in contaminated areas. Bacteria filters are also used in water purification processes. Dedicated bacteria filters are available in a variety of shapes and sizes; they may include connectors for attachment to devices such as masks and ventilation systems.
