Retractors designed for temporary separation of the jaws (known as mouth gags), keeping the mouth open, exposing and providing access to other tissues, organs, or oral structures during dental and/or oral surgery procedures. Most of these retractors are manual, handheld instruments including two adjustable blunt blades at the distal ends; the retractors frequently have a ratchet mechanism to keep the blades in a self-retained position during the procedure. In addition to the surgical and dental procedures, mouth gags are frequently used for airway management after trauma.
