Endoscopes designed for direct insertion through the mouth in the upper gastrointestinal tract for visual examination, biopsy, retrieval of foreign bodies, and treatment of lesions of the interior of the stomach. Some devices also permit the examination and treatment of the esophagus. Gastroscopes usually include a lighting system and a working channel for catheters and operative devices; these endoscopes may be rigid or flexible.
