  • Equipment designed to remove specific toxins or wastes from the blood (i.e., hemofiltration). Typically blood is taken via an extracorporeal circuit and passed through a high flux membrane that convectively extracts water and medium size molecular waste; a sterile replacement solution with similar electrolytic concentration as a dialysis solution is then infused in the same amount as the solution that is filtered out from the bloodstream. No dialysis procedure is performed during hemofiltration. Hemofiltration units are intended to decrease biochemical abnormalities as well as fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base imbalances; the procedure results in the flushing of larger molecules (e.g. medium-sized molecules) of water soluble substances from the bloodstream than hemodialysis. Hemofiltration is used mainly for blood purification in hemodynamic unstable patients or in those suffering from cardiovascular problems; hemofiltration units are frequently combined with other devices to conform continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) units.
