  • Laboratory blood analyzers dedicated to measure serum iron, total iron binding capacity, and transferrin saturation. These analyzers may be automated. The results are frequently obtained by comparison with a calibration curve from the measured absorbance of iron standard working solutions. These assays are useful only in screening for chronic iron-overload diseases and for confirmation and monitoring of acute iron poisoning in children; they are therefore unreliable for identification of iron deficiency.
