?:definition
  • Devices designed to cover the nose and mouth of healthcare workers during surgical procedures or patient examinations for the purpose of limiting transmission of infectious agents from healthcare worker to the patient and/or environment. These surgical masks are also designed to protect the wearer from contact with infectious agents in respiratory secretions (i.e., droplet transmission) and sprays or splashes of body fluids (i.e., contact transmission); however, surgical masks are not designed to block or filter small airborne particles (i.e., airborne transmission). In addition to use by healthcare workers, surgical masks may also be used to cover the nose and mouth of potentially infectious patients to limit dissemination of respiratory secretions (i.e., source containment). These masks typically consist of multiple layers, of porous, fluid-resistant fabric material that cover the nose and mouth. Surgical masks typically incorporate a flexible metallic band along their top border that allows the mask to be conformed to the bridge of the user\'s nose and straps that allow the mask to be held in place by tying the straps around the user\'s head/neck or looping the straps around the user\'s ears.
