Lower-limb orthoses designed for external modification of the structural and/or functional characteristics of the knee joint, providing immobilization and support. These orthoses may be classified according to the function of the orthoses (e.g., support, therapeutic, functional), the physical characteristics (e.g., shape, consistency), and/or material used to make the orthosis (metal, plastics or a combination of these). Knee lower-limb orthoses frequently consist of soft or semi-rigid orthoses that can provide immobilization, therapeutic, and/or functional (i.e., gait) control of movement during rehabilitation, normal activities, or practice of sports. Some knee lower-limb orthoses are intended to provide motion control of the knee joint after surgery.
