  • Glass or plastic tubes with both ends open that are used for manual transfer of controlled amounts of liquids from one container to another. Most pipettes are used to transfer liquid volumes between one and one hundred milliliters. Pipettes may be designed to deliver a specific volume of liquid (i.e., volumetric pipettes) or calibrated to permit the measurement of different amounts of liquid with the same pipette (i.e., measuring pipette). Bulb fillers are usually attached to the aspiration end of the pipette (traditionally known as the mouthpiece); mouth pipetting is an unsafe practice used to draw liquid up into the pipette not allowed currently in most laboratories. Volumetric and measuring pipettes of several types are used in healthcare facilities, mainly in clinical laboratories.
